Toronto Singing Lessons & Vocal Coaching BLOG – AN INSIDE LOOK

AN INSIDER'S LOOK at Singing Lessons With Top Toronto Vocal Coach Paul Gasztold

Who Is The Greatest Rock Singer Alive Today?

What moves you?

.

We’ve had so many truly great Rock Singers.  From the Beatles all the way tp Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin.  And the greats who have passed from their live such as Freddie Mercury of Queen.

.

I think it doesn’t matter at all who is the best.   What matters is what moves you.

.

So what moves you deeply?    What Singer do you go to when you are feeling something in your life and feel a need to express/understand and heal yourself through music?

.

The greatest Singers have told us that Life is all about love.   And about light and the emotions that make us feel good.  Even elevated.

.

The great ones have also shown us the darker unknown sides of ourselves teaching us indirectly that these need to be embraced and accepted as well for them to heal.

.

Aren’t l0ss and pain are as much part of life as joy and happiness?

.

Feeling and expressing the full range of ourselves can bring us to our own truth and our inner core much more directly than ignoring parts of ourselves.

.

Connecting with our ‘darker’ sides is even necessary and this just one of the messages of the great rock Singers and writers.

.

By dark I’m not advocating violence or hurting ourselves or anyone.  But embracing how we really feel.  Happy or sad.  Connected or lonely.

.

I wanted to tell you about someone who some believe may be the greatest rock Singer alive today.

.

Does it matter who is the best? No.

.
‘Best or not best’ is a mind game.
.

And completely irrelevant to music, which is in my life an emotional journey…the head can distract from what is real. From what is felt.

.

You might not even like to listen to rock Singers. Unless he really moves you. But maybe you need to. And maybe you need to listen to classical Singers because there is part of you there waiting to be discovered and uncovered.

.

The ONLY thing that matters is what moves you.   Searching for it.  Knowing it when you find it.  And giving it its due.

.

Fully allowing it to enter your life if it moves you.

.
Especially if you don’t think it ‘deserves’ a place.
.

This week I invite you to discover what moves you.  What touches your soul.
.

Listen to something you’ve never considered listening to.  And sing something, a genre maybe, that you’ve never before considering singing.

.

And find parts of yourself that you may not have even know exist.

.

Enjoy!

.

By the way, speaking of great rock Singers…Just in case you may have never had the chance to hear him yet…

.

If you’d like,  check out Jimmy Gnecco, type ‘  Jimmy Gnecco Darling ‘ into youtube.   This is for the song ‘darling’ from his solo CD.

.

If Chopin was a rock singer, he might sound like Jimmy Gnecco.

Singers…How To Enjoy Where You Are Right now

The original online post of this blog article can be found at…

http://www.afreesingingvoice.com/torontosinginglessons/

.
.

We sing to feel great.  And to make others feel great.

.

If you’ve been working developing your singing voice for a while now you’ve probably noticed that the more you learn, they more skill you develop the more you realize you’d like to learn!

.

It is a most wonderful thing that the journey never ends… it goes on and on and on and on.

.

So what if we’re waiting for a destination, for a day when we’ve got it all.?  Well, that day will never arrive.  Do you see that?

.

If we love singing and growing, we will likely  keep raising the bar as we realize more and more of our potential.

.

But we don’t have to.   We certainly can, but we don’t have to to be happy.

.

We don’t have to change to be happy now.  Growing by itself won’t make us happy tomorrow.  Only enjoying and appreciating where we are today will make us happy today.  And happy tomorrow.

.

It is a lot of fun to achieve new ability for self-expression… I absolutely love expanding myself it which is why I keep learning each week.   But I don’t have to to be happy.

.

Being happy today and appreciating where we’ve come from and using the voice we have today to express and feel great is really what it is all about.  And sharing it with others.

.

It is not about tomorrow.  Consider being happy today and feeling gratitude for what you have today that you probably didn’t have yesterday.

.

Go have fun and sing!

your coach,

Paul Gasztold

Secrets To Singing and Life Success … The DIP

ATTENTION SINGERS…

There is a time to quit and a time not to quit.

And what is  ‘The Dip’??

.

Just working hard at something will not bring us success.  We need to know exactly when to quit our current strategy and apply our efforts on a different strategy or path that will win.

.

In my life I’ve spend 10 years ( plan A ) working on my voice in a certain way to achieve marginal changes.  I’ve also invested 3 months ( plan B )approaching it differently and grown 100 times as much as I did in the previous 10 years.

.

This happens all the time to Singers, but many don’t ever get to plan B.   Because they don’t know when to quit.

.

You need to know when to quit plan A to get to plan B.

.

Perhaps this has happened to you …Somewhere in your own life?

.

Now imagine this scenario:

.

You’re now on Plan B, and a month into it.  For the first month you’re getting enormous changes and great feedback from friends and family.  Then month two comes along and you experience ‘a dip’…. you’re not getting the same rate of changes as you did in month 1.

.

Should you quit?  Or should you ‘lean in’ and break through?

.

How would you know?  Most Singers quit in month two when they shouldn’t.

.

Because if they had just continued on and worked with even more focus they would have gone where few Singers have ever gone…. to a whole new level of Vocal Freedom.

.

When to quit and when not to.  Would you know?

.

I believe that YOU need to read this book:

.

The Dip ( A Little Book That Teaches You When To Quit and When To Stick )

by Seth Godin

.

If you’re like most people there are projects  you are working on right now that you need to quit.

And there are others you need to begin.  For your music, your singing voice and most importantly your life.

.

This book will help you learn when to quit and when not to.

It will explain what the Dip is.

.

I’ll see you on the other side.  :)

.

.

Your mission this week ( if you accept it ) is in two parts:

..

1) Immediately order the book  ‘The Dip’

2) Take a look at what is an essential part of your singing learning process… that one thing that if you did it you would step ahead of those who ‘wish they could’ but didn’t.

BONUS:  Go do something you love to do that normally you wouldn’t…something that makes that little voice in you go  ‘oh yeah”.

..

HAVE FUN and keep singing,

Paul

The Secrets Of Song Writing

Are You A Song-Writer?

…or would you love to be one?

.

The key to writing is not being in our head…

.
…you may also remember from Singing Lessons Toronto that the key to Singing
is also not being in our head. It is being someplace even more real.
.

The key to song-writing is being present, in the moment and not trying. It
is about being in process…

.
The following is a quote from who many say is one of the best of the best song writers of all time…

.
“I’d spent five hours that morning trying to write a song that was meaningful and good. I was just sitting, trying to think, and I thought of myself sitting there doing nothing and going nowhere. Once I’d thought of that, it was easy; it all came out. No, I remember now, I’d actually stopped trying to think of something. Nothing would come. I was cheesed off and went for a lie down, having given up. Then I thought of myself as nowhere man, sitting in this nowhere land. ‘Nowhere Man’ came, words and music, the whole damn thing. The same with ‘In My Life.’ I’d struggled for days and hours, trying to write clever lyrics. Then I gave up, and ‘In My Life’ came to me. Letting it go is the whole game.”

.
If you haven’t figured out who yet, the quote above is from John Lennon.
.
But he received his ideas from the exact same place YOU will.

.
The same space that starts in silence and presence.

.
This wonderful place where our heads/minds aren’t in the way.

.

If you’re interested in song writing classes/lessons let me know…
we’ll be covering many more ’secrets’ to writing music.

.

Have a great week,

HAVE FUN and keep singing,
Paul

Improvisation Tracks

Enjoy singing over these  improvisation tracks

Enjoy these tracks for improvising over.  Sing freely sliding around instead of trying

to ‘hit’ the notes.  The actual notes don’t matter, freeing up your voice to flow

and releasing the tongue is the key.  We’ll talk about these in your upcoming lessons.

‘Make up’ melodies singing ‘ah’   ‘ee’ and with tongue flaps as discussed in our lessons.
.

Have fun!

.

There are times everyone’s life when we question whether we are making progress.   Whether or not we will ever arrive at our goals.

.

No one escapes these questions, not even one Singer I’ve ever met regardless of their level of success.

.

Does this mean that they are not achieving their goals?  Absolutely not.  They are achieving their goals.   The SECRET of success is that the journey to success in anything is NEVER A STRAIGHT LINE.

.

There are plateus and dips and valleys and peaks,  but it is almost never straight.

.

When you ride your bike do you stop when you get to a valley?  No y0u keep going.  Do you stop when you are at the base of a hill?  No way, you keep moving.

.

And you arrive.  GUARANTEED.

.

I’ve not yet met one Singer, or musician, or artist who didn’t arrive at their goal if they kept learning and kept applying.

.

I am sharing this story with you today not because you need to hear it today.  You might.  Or you might need it tomorrow.  Or in a year. Remember it.

.

Remember that the road to success is never a straight line.    You don’t always see your progress, in fact most often you won’t.   The SECRET is knowing this.  And in keeping moving regardless.

.

Here’s to your singing success and your incredibly wondrous journey of self-discovery along the way.

.

Here’s a quote from a Singer today who had his lesson and an amazing concert performance.  This Singer couldn’t have done this a year ago but shows what happens when we consistently focus on the process.

.

” Friday my vocal performance was just incredible.   I’ve never felt so free singing on stage before.  I kept in mind what you said in our lesson [ staying focused on the process and not the result ] and the results were REMARKABLE! “

Happiness & Fulfillment … Secret KEYS To Singing Success

The original online post of this blog article can be found at…

http://www.afreesingingvoice.com/torontosinginglessons/

This is article is for all Singers who wish to connect deeply with themselves and their audience…

.

( PS.  It is especially important for those of us who don’t think we really need it …  )

.

Perhaps you’ve been so busy with things you never noticed …  until you stop one day and look where life is really going …

.

—>  Warning!!!!   Reading this article could change your life for the better if you’re not careful… READER BEWARE!!!!

.

Most of us, Singers included, have been trained very successfully by schools, parents, the media and the workplace to forfeit what it is really in our hearts.

.

We’ve been conditioned that it is ok, even admirable to do things we don’t want to do.  And as a result many of us have forgotten or never really realized what we truly love.

.

And many of us wake up, go to work or school with an empty place inside.  Not every day, but many days if you’re like most people.

.

To compensate, many Singers are singing to fill this void within themselves.  Would you agree that it is challenging to give to others as Singers when we’re feeling a bit on the empty side ourselves.

.

Perhaps you’ve been so busy with things you never noticed …  until you stop one day and look where life is really going …

.

It this the way Life was meant to be?  Does it have to be like this for us ?  Does it have to be like this for you?

.

And would y0u like to really find out?

.

Then my strong recommendation to you right now is to drop whatever you’re doing… and RUN… don’t walk …. to your local or online bookstore   and order this book immediately …

.

The Joy Of Not Working by Ernie Zelinski

.

And then read it within 7 days from when it arrives.

.

( To my current Singing students … please consider this as homework and  NOT optional.  )

.

This book teaches us how to live.  How to enjoy.  How to do what we love.  And how to live a deeply meaningful life.

.

Don’t waste another second…

.

I truly look forward to watching how your life blossoms.   I can’t wait to see how much joy radiates from your being.

.

PS.  There is an unsubcribe link at the bottom of these posts just for those who don’t wish to receive them.

Getting The Most Out Of Your Singing Lessons

To view the original post ...you may click here:
http://www.afreesingingvoice.com/torontosinginglessons

.

The following tips have been found to be most helpful to many

Toronto Singers taking personal singing lessons:

.

1. Record your lesson

Using your camera, cell phone or mp3 voice recorder.

Video recording is a great way to do this.  Most people these days

have small inexpensive cameras which can record video as well.

You can get used ones a few years old for $50 on craigslist.

Another great option is recording voice only.  However watching

is very instructive.  But no matter how you record it, just record it

taking notes the very same day or the next day so you can use them

in your practice to make it most effective.

.

Tips:

~   Use the settings which make the file size small, you don’t

need the highest quality

~   Clear enough memory to record 45 minutes

~   Create a habit of charging up the battery the night before your lesson

~   Save your session on your computer

~   Create notes in a word document from the video immediately

after the lesson ( within 24 hours is best )

~  In your notes write down exactly the time and filename

of each exercise and example so you can reference it later

~  using these  notes along with the video/audio when you practice saves time and makes your session more effective

.

.

.

2. Skype ( or Phone In ) For Your Lesson

There will be days you don’t feel well, are out of town or just

cannot make it in to your lesson.

More and more Singers today are enjoying the benefits of using Skype

( or phone ) for their singing lessons.

.

Tips:

~  it is advantageous to find a way to record the lesson audio for your skype lesson

~  you may also use a regular phone for audio while using Skype for the video

~  some Singers find it beneficial to place a speaker phone ( set on mute ) in another

room to record the lesson audio, which frees them up to use a handheld or other device

~  there are many ways to do this

.

IMPORTANT:  If you wish to Skype or phone in for your lesson

please call to let us know a few days ahead, or at a minimum a few hours ahead

so we can prepare for your call.

.

.

.

3. Practice/Discover At Least 45 Minutes Daily

.

The more we experience the freedom of the singing techniques we learn in our lessons,  the more free our singing voices become.  And the richer, more fulfilling and more fun our singing experience is.

.

The Singers who apply their lesson material  for at least 45 minutes daily by far grow the best.  Realize that creating MOMENTUM, by doing it every day, is the key.  To create momentum do a little each day even 10 minutes to start and after enjoying it you will want to increase them time.  Optimally you can do 15 minutes many times through the day to achieve  vocal freedom.  You’ll find it feels great and is a lot of fun.

.

4. Leave Extra Time To Arrive Feeling Relaxed

.

It is most fun to feel relaxed before your lesson, the most relaxed Singers are usually the ones who leave early in order to arrive at their lesson a few minutes ahead of schedule.

.

5. Plan Ahead For Your Singing Success

.

It probably won’t be a surprise to anyone that Singers achieve their greatest breakthroughs and freedom in their singing voices when they are consistent in their lessons.

.

There are times, however when lessons  need to be rescheduled.

.

To assist other Singers like yourself please remember to give many days notice ( 7-15 days is best ) if you ever need to reschedule your lesson.  This way it gives enough time to find you another time for that week while allowing ample time for someone else to have your spot.

.

Giving notice very early ( many days or weeks ) makes it easiest for everyone to find the perfect lesson time.

.

IMPORTANT:  Please remember that a minimum of 48 hours notice is required ( not 47 hours but 48 )  if you cannot make a lesson,  however even 48 hours still doesn’t leave enough time for your spot to be used by someone else.  So please consider calling many days ahead to make things flow for everyone.

.

Tip:  Many Singers find Skype  or phone to be very convenient when out of town or if lesson timing is a concern.

.

I hope you find these learning tips beneficial.  Have a great week.

.

best,

Paul Gasztold

Anatomy Of The Singing Voice

http://www.afreesingingvoice.com/torontosinginglessons

.

In our singing lessons we learn how to make sounds with the vocal

cords ( also called vocal folds ) while allowing all of the other

muscles such as the tongue to release.

.

Once all other muscles and tensions are released, the vocal

cords are for the first time able to learn how to make all the sounds

it desires.  They joyfully realize that it finally gets to sing ’solo’ for the first time!

.

The vocal cords now become free to learn, unrestricted by any other

part of the body which was trying to help, but was previously

getting in the way of your vocal freedom.

.

We’ll experience and discover this in our lesson, but for now enjoy the

illustrations below of the singing anatomy.  We’ll refer to this in our lessons.

Success 101 – How To Be Successful As A Singer

This is an article for all Singers looking to make a career out of singing one day.

.

.

How To Be Successful As A Singer

I met a very nice man today, a singer who I’ll call Frank,  walking his dog on the beach … and I enjoyed chatting with him.

.

We spoke about singing and he told me about how he has a really nice voice and if circumstances were different he felt he could have been a very Successful Singer.

.

Actually he didn’t say ‘Successful Singer’.  He was using words like…

.

‘Making It BIG, Move Over Michael Buble’

.

This reminded me of the illusions that most Singers have about the Music Business and making a living doing music.

.

Almost EVERY Singer I meet has a very different version of the reality of  what is involved in ‘making it’ than what is actually real.

.

For those who wish to know the truth about being a singing success … read on…

.

THE TRUTH About Singing Success…

.

Being a successful Singer is about making yourself and your listeners FEEL the way you and they want to feel.  That’s it.  I’ve said this many times before and it is still true that …

.

‘Success is everything about elevating the listener and adding something to ( transforming ) their life for the better. ‘
.

Would you take a moment read the last line again?  Take a moment and think about what this means for your listeners.

.

Someone can be very ’successful’ in a business and make money yet still not feel fulfilled and happy.  Making money doesn’t necessarily mean that they are making a positive difference in their own life or others lives, which is a key to life success, wouldn’t you agree?

.

A happy Singer on the beach who makes himself and others light up on the inside is 100% successful as a Singer.

.
If this is the truth about singing success.  Can anyone become successful as a Singer.  Yes, absolutely.

.Should every Singer achieve this kind of singing success?

.

Absolutely.  Definitely.  Yes.

..

Success in The Music  BUSINESS, on the other hand, is a different thing entirely.

.

THE TRUTH About Success In The Music BUSINESS

.

Let’s go back to Michael Buble.  Michael has a really wonderful voice and talent.  Most would agree that he really moves his audience and makes them feel really wonderful.  Many also feel they that Michael’s music makes their lives better.

.

By our definition of singing success Michael Buble is  a great success.  Slam dunk.

.

There are many Singers every bit as wonderful and talented as a Michael Buble.  In fact there are many that are even better.  Most of these will not have the same level of Music Business success. Why not?

.

Most Singers aren’t aware of the 95% of BUSINESS success that has nothing to do with Singing.

.

.

The Recipe* For Music Business Success ( In Mainstream Media )

30%    Years of hard work on the business side

20%    Having LOTS of $$ behind you

10%    Moving your listeners

10%    Quality of songs

5%       Singing ability and talent

5%       Timing

5%       Luck

2%        Being coachable and willing to change

2%        Other ( look etc. )

1%        Sticking with it long enough

*while this formula is likely not at 100% accurate, it can be seen as instructive and enlightening

.

.

Remember, we’re talking now about BUSINESS success ( which is about making money ), not Singing Success ( which is about making your and other’s lives better ).

What do you think? Can anyone achieve Music Business Success?

.

If they are willing to put far more into and be better at EVERY ingredient in the recipe above than each of the other 400,000 Singers fighting for the same Music Business Success…then yes,  they can have it.

.

Yes, it can be done.  Someone does win the lottery each year.  And there is always someone who works 10 times harder in ALL areas than every other very hard worker.

.

But the truth is that you don’t need Big Media Success to feel fulfilled and make a living as a Singer creating music.

.

The truth is that you may not even need to make a living doing music, you could make a living doing something else you love AND do great music as well.

.

.

‘If I Could ONLY Get A Record Deal’

… then my career problems would be solved.

.

Ask yourself, do you really need a record deal?

.

‘.‘The little known truth about record deals

…is that most (99% ?) of Singers that get signed to a label only get label support ( money ) for the very first album.  Even though they could be signed for up to five albums.

If  your first album doesn’t sell HUGE numbers the record company won’t put any more money behind you.  They’ll focus on the next artist hoping they’ll get luckier next time.  Like so many other signed artists, You could be left waiting out a contract for years unable to move on with your music.’

.

The truth of the Music Business ( via Mainstream Media ) is that most ( 99.9% ? ) signed Singers who have a contract have a record label who won’t put any more money behind them.  And they can’t leave the contract until it expires.  This has happened to many, many very well known artists.  And it is happening today.

.

What about today?

These days record labels won’t even look at you unless you’ve already built up a very large following.  And by the time you’ve done that you don’t need them anymore.  So do you really need a record deal?

.

But you say, ‘I want to have a large audience!’

.

So How Can YOU Achieve Music Business Success???

.

You still CAN achieve music business success.   If you’re interested.   And I hope you are.

.

But would you first consider redefining your vision of success?

.

I’m talking about a different kind of business success.  It is not Music Business success as defined by the media,  which tries to create very few BIG BIG stars while ignoring everyone else.

.

The business success I’m talking about is creating tremendous value, great music and love  for an audience you discover yourself.

.

YOUR audience is whoever you create a relationship with and who loves you and your music so much they bring their friends too.

.

The GREAT NEWS is that there are not limit to the number of artists who create this.  As long as you create good enough music and find people who love your music enough then YOU can create music business success.

.

EXERCISE:

Are you serious about a career in music?  If so,  take  a minute now and figure this out:

.

How many $15 CD’s do you need to sell each year to your fans to make a good living?     Then multiple the number by 20 because one out of 20 fans will buy a CD.   This is the minimum number of true fans you need to make a living as a Singer.

.

What is this number?  Can you create this number of true fans over 5 or 10 years?  ABSOLUTELY!

___________________________________________

.

You can create a music business career for yourself if you learn how to do all the right things, are coachable and stick with it.  This is NOT Major Media Music Business Success.  But it is success for you and for your listeners.

.

The whole world won’t know who you are but your fans will because you are making a difference in their world.

.

Music Business FACT:

These days most record labels won’t look at you unless you’ve already built up a very large following.  And by the time you’ve done that you don’t need them anymore.

.

If Frank who I met earlier today is looking to create this kind of music business success ( creating his own audience ) then he is being realistic.  If he is talking about Music Business Success ( Big Media Success ) then …  well,  now you know the numbers behind it.

.

And now that you know the realities of success….

.

… perhaps you’re willing to be totally realistic and BRAVE and true enough to yourself and your music to learn how to create a workable, enjoyable, WONDERFUL life for yourself creating music..

.

You can be a successful hobby Singer who makes people happy.   Or you can try to be a Major Media Star.  Or you can be successful as a music business person outside major media by creating and taking care of your own audience.

.

These are all forms of success and you have choices.

.

And whichever way you choose to go, I’m behind you all the way!

.

Here’s to YOUR Singing Success!

.

keep singing,

Paul Gasztold

WHEN you sing….

.

Always create a deep connection with yourself,  your environment

and your audience ….

.

From this peaceful place we can uplift, harmonious, heal and

transform ourselves and our listeners…

.

THIS  is the essence of Singing.

.

Singing is so much more than entertainment…

‘Singing is the healing touch of the infinite presence within us.”

- PAVEL Paul Gasztold

.

.

In our connection with ourselves and others we change

the world…starting with ourselves.

.

.

The previous exercise works from the high notes

down.  Singers are getting WONDERFUL results

when we apply it, but sometimes things stop working,

for no other reason than the singing voice needs

change.

ENJOY this new singing exercise ‘ 5 note bliss ‘, which works

from the low notes up in a five note scale.  We’ll

talk about how to best use this in our lessons,   there

is SO much more than meets the eye here…

Happiness is the key to success

“Success is not the key to happiness.
Happiness is the key to success.”

~Albert Schweitzer, philosopher, physician, musician, Nobel laureate.

The club we are in is focused on understanding the fearless mind.  The danger of not keeping this commitment to understanding and using your mind (instead of it using you), is that you’ll always be confusing reality with the content of your mind. Also, you will not have any way to step back from your thoughts and just be. All your other commitments in life will be weakened by this fundamental misunderstanding of the human mind.

The beauty of this commitment to understanding is that it puts you in the proper relationship with your mind. Your mind becomes a sparkling tool to be used and then set down when not needed or wanted. Soon you feel the happiness that lives inside of everything, powering everything, breathing you, pumping your heart and giving you everything.

This message is a copy of that sent by Steve Chandler from

I encourage ALL Singers to take advantage of this

extraordinary club to set your mind and spirit free.
